Did you setup the router correctly, many ISPs have different settings  
that routers need to be configured with generally speaking if the  
router is all setup and you know the password or the network is left  
open you should be able to connect and then known networks are  
automatically reconnected after that. By the way what wireless card or  
airport or usb adapter are you using. This may make a difference in  
determining if the computer's wireless is set correctly.
