Thanks for the responses! I've learned things.  I note that Netflix
has an interesting automatic quality finder that deems my video
quality to be "high"; I can see it fiddling in the first moments of
the video until it gets a sharp picture.  On my end, extending the
helpful tests suggested here, I've tried connecting a faster computer
(2.46Gh Cord 2 duo) to the cable modem directly by ethernet, but still
no enlightenment.  The upgrade service from the provider costs another
$15/mo, which gives me pause.  I think at this point I will stop my
investigation.  Maybe an update of the Netflix player will reduce the
jumps.  Thanks again.
