All OS X major versions:10.0, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 can be installed  
on their own without previous OS X installs. You are correct, though,  
that you have to update the firmware, and to do that you need to  
update OS 9. That can be done by downloading the updates from Apple.
