Hi Bill, HFS+ is a legacy volume format for Macs. HFS+ Journaled is the default format for Mac OS X. It includes support for file system journaling, which helps maintain the integrity of your volume structure. See the following for a good explanation of file system journaling in Mac OS 10.3:
