My Mail program has unexpectedly quit a couple times lately, and just
happened twice today. The second time I restarted, I got the dialog
box/set up wizard thing that asks if you want to use new settings or
original settings. I didn't know which to choose, so just quit the
app and restarted my computer.

I'm concerned I need to do something to fix this issue before losing
all my settings and my vast quantities of saved mail etc... or if
does happen again do I choose 'new settings' (are those my settings
as compared to default settings?). I used to know what to do when
little issues like this arose... but that was back in OS9...

Suggestions? I didn't like 'Mail' when I first used it (I'd been a
longtime user of Outlook Express (I think that's what it was) and
then switched to Thunderbird. But somewhere along the way I went back
to Mail and have become used to it, so not sure I want to make a
switch again.
