First thing to do is back up your "vast quantities of saved mail"
which is in your user diretcotry in the ~Library/Mail folder. Once
backed up you can work on solving the problem.

What does the crash log fro MAil tell you (start up the console
application in Applications>Utilities) and click on Show log list, the
crash logs are stored in ~Library/Logs/CrashReporter and has a
separate log for each application.

Depending on the version of OS X you're using it will look somewhat
different, but this is a partial example of what one looks like:

Process: Mail [376]
Path: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
Identifier: com.apple.mail
Version: 3.2 (919)
Build Info: Mail-9190000~3
Code Type: X86 (Native)
Parent Process: launchd [249]

Date/Time: 2008-04-14 09:52:02.631 -0700
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.2 (9C7010)
Report Version: 6

Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP)
Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000
Crashed Thread: 13

Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception
'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSCFDictionary
setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil value (key: <MailboxUid:
0x79fce0 (relative path=, attributes=0x12)>)'

Copy out this much of the crash log and post it here, this will help
in determining your problem.
