Sounds like hard disk has died! It was working right? Comes on but goes off? If the hard disk can't load after a few seconds of it being on,it's dead! I have the same eMac 700mhz. And at this age and heavy use the drive on mine gives failing errors too! I bought it used from a school. It is a bit sluggish. Luckily I have a firewire 80 gig drive and made a copy of all files. You should replace the memory and the hard disk. 80 gigs and 1 gig of RAM will make you smile.
