Hi

Some iMac G3s shipped with DVD drives, along with G4 Cubes - both of which
are capable of running OS9.

It is very easy to swap out an optical drive in an iMac G3. Keep in mind,
they only have USB 1.1 so transfer would be slow and that these machines
cannot boot from USB.

You would either need a firewire DVD drive or a firewire hard drive with
the Tiger image restored to it. I use my iPod with Tiger restored to it as
it is so much quicker than a DVD drive and is superb.

The iMac G3 is more than capable of running Tiger, but I would recommend
cramming it with RAM to compensate for the slower processor speeds. I had a
G3 iMac 500Mhz with 768MB of RAM a few months ago and it zipped along
nicely running Tiger.

You can get Tiger on CD but it is very rare. It was a mail-in option from
Apple and not retail.

Hi there,

New to group.

I've recently acquired a Flower Power G3 iMac, but it's got a CD
thingy rather than a DVD thingy. I'm going to do various things to
upgrade it. The fact that it is fanless & has a CRT makes it ideal for
light media duties in, say, a bedroom. I really do prefer to watch
video on a CRT. Historically, most video was shot for CRT output.

Does anyone have recent experience of swapping the cd thingy for a
modern slot loading DVD drive? Can it be done? And will OS9 recognise
a modern device as a DVD-ROM? I want to upgrade to Tiger at some point
- doesn't it generally come on a DVD?

Or can I go the USB route for a DVD drive? I've got other devices that
don't have an optical drive and an external USB DVD drive would be
useful but I can live without - internal DVD drive in the iMac a much
preferred solution.
