get a Western Digital I have had only 3 WD fail in 18 years of hdd's I still have sub-GB drives that work. I have tossed many non-wd, and lost much data on them FYI a Fu-jet-su hdd was the loudest 3.5" drives I have ever dealt with it was like having a jet turbine powered system the drive never failed, I had to get rid of it just the same, it was way too loud also, I am not sure if the caveats you mentioned apply when the drive is used as an external I know you can pick any brand of hdd and you can find someone to say exactly what I have said, but about their brand of choice, so this isnt presented as law, just my experience I will never buy any (P/S)ATA drive than a WD ...... YMMV SCSI is a different matter, but I wont go there now :^) -- I'm a PC(x86 AND ppc) AND I RUN LINUX!!! Linux is like ice cream. It comes in many flavors and everyone has their favorite, but we all get the same smile regardless of which we choose to scoop.
