That is possible, in which case you could try deleting the audio prefs... Not entirely sure this is the only sound preference file, but move this one to your desktop (for diagnosis, if it doesn't fix the problem, you can move it back. If it does fix your problem, then you can trash it.) It's under: (Your HD)> Users> (your username)> Library> Preferences> com.apple.soundpref.plist
You might have to restart, then see if that fixes your problem. Good luck!
