Thanks for the suggestion! It hadn't even occurred to me to call
Apple; I figured they would just try to sell me a new (retail, full
price) copy of OS X, or try to convince me to buy a whole new machine.

I wonder, though... my machine is an eMac, not an iMac, and the eMacs
were only sold to schools... do you think that would pose any kind of
problem, since I'm an individual and not an educational institution?

I guess it can't hurt to ask!
