I have a 1 GHz G4 eMac (bought from my University's computer store) that can read DVDs, although it cannot write them. So, are you sure that your eMac can't read DVDs? This eMac came with OS X 10.2.4, but I upgraded later to 10.3.9. Now it's running 10.4.11 with no problems (RAM is now 2x 512MB instead of the original 128 MB). The upgrade CD for 10.3 was supplied by Apple under some special program that required that I mail in one of the Software Update coupons that the eMac came with. The upgrade to 10.4 was done with a retail Tiger upgrade DVD to 10.4.6 followed by download from Apple.com of the update to 10.4.11. If it's of any use to help you identify what model you have, here is some information I copied from Tiger's version of About this Mac: Machine Model: PowerMac 4,4 CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.1) CPU Speed: 1 GHz Bus Speed: 133 MHz Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1 Graphics/Display ATI Radeon 7500 Chipset Model: ATY, RV200 Disk Burning Philips CDD5301 Firmware Revs: 21.8 Interconnect: ATAPI CD-Write: -R, -RW Reads DVD: Yes --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's iMac List, a group for those using G3, G4, G5, and Intel Core iMacs as well as Apple eMacs.
