Odds are the router just isn't fast enough to route the packets between 
your LAN (wired or wireless) and the WAN (cable modem).  I would have 
expected an "N" router to be fast enough but it doesn't appear that way.

Try doing a web search to see if you can find a speed comparison of 
current routers that rate the WAN - LAN speed.  Then get one of the 
faster models.
