Send via SMTP.  Receive via POP3.  Two different unrelated protocols 
and servers.

Without warning users, Apple changed the way Mail handles ports in 
Mail in Snow Leopard.

Recheck with your provider to make sure you're telling Mail to use 
the correct port and authorization type for the SMTP service.
