This is just a follow-up to the problem I posted about last April. I replaced the superdrive in my 20" G4 and afterwards the fan wouldn't run consistently.
I got lots of helpful responses back then and I would like to thank everyone again for that! Anyway, the advice boiled down to: 1) replace the fan 2) repair the fan I looked for a replacement fan in April but I couldn't find one. The 20" fan is apparently different than the 15" & 17" one. So I set up an external fan as a temporary solution, which worked so well that I never got around to taking the thing apart again to see if I could fix the existing fan. I've looked for a replacement fan a few times since then but mostly I didn't worry about it. There aren't that many 20" G4s out there I guess. Well, last week I found one - so I opened it up again this morning and pulled the old fan. Comparing the two fans, the old one spins freely, but the "new" one spins freely for at least twice as many revs. So I peeled back the sticker, added a drop of 3-in-one oil, and installed it. As soon as I booted it, the fan started running. So I guess it turns out to be continuous duty rather than thermostatically controlled. I've replaced the front bezel, the superdrive, and the fan on this machine, and added RAM and Airport cards. I no longer have any fear of taking the thing apart! Anybody know whether it's possible to add internal Bluetooth to one of these? ;-) I admit that I am lusting after the 27" Quad-core beastie, but I fully expect to get at least two more years of service out of this 1.25ghz G4. With 1gb of RAM and a 150gb hard drive, it runs 10.5.8 like a champ! Thanks!
