I don't really know whether this is relevant but here goes:
My G4 iMac with superdrive wouldn't read about half of the files on dual layer 
production DVD-ROMs, but everything else seemed normal. A couple years later it 
wouldn't read DVDs at all but would still read CDs and I had to replace it.

I'm suggesting of course that it may be a hardware problem. Especially if this 
is a new behavior.
