I wouldn't know if this is a new development, because I purchased it
used and already upgraded.
I do know that it reads -r disks fine, reads and writes cds fine, and
reads holywood disks and commercial disks prefectly fine (including
DVD9)
I know that my old laptop needed a firmware upgrade on it's drive to
allow it to read dvd+r disks, so I was guessing the same for my iMac.
