I have been able to start the emac with an external Firewire HD which has OS 10.5 and the emac has a stick of 256 MGs of ram. When I've used the option key to choose a drive, sometimes the internal HD shows up and sometimes it doesn't. I've run Disk Utility on the drive, as well as the drive utility from Apple Care. The Apple Care utility checks out the HD as just fine without any errors. Running Disk Utility shows there are problems with permissions and other issues with it. I've not gotten it to be completely repaired with regards to permissions.

TIA for any help. And yes, I've tried selecting the internal drive using setup preferences and choosing the internal drive. At that point, it just sits there and won't reboot when the internal drive is showing.

Restart the eMac holding down the shift key and it will start in
safemode. Goto the startup pref panel and set it to your startup
disk.
Check your version there too jut incase OSX thinks your usb stick is
the hardrive. Ive always been told to copy any osx upgrade to the
harddrive before starting it

cheers paul

You run the upgrade from the instal DVD/CD. Also, he meant RAM stick, not USB stick.
