Thanks for everyone's replies!

I took the machine to the Apple store and they admitted this "was a known 
problem". They have ordered a new lcd and will replace it free of charge. 
Considering this is three years after the warranty expired I think that's 
Fabulous Service!

While their action may not make the most obvious business sense, I for one will 
be going back to Apple for my next laptop.
