A while back I posted about my friend's Mac that lacked an optical drive. I used a USB<>HD adapter cable to copy both install DVDs onto a HD and I chose "Upgrade this OS" (when I really should've chosen "Archive and Install"). I thought it would be smart enough to see what's missing and just fix it. Sadly, I was wrong....

When the install was done, we got the Welcome video and the various forms you fill out with a new computer. I had copied all her data off her non-booting hard drive and once we'd re-installed I copied all her data back.

Of course, it knew nothing about her previous user profile so she was starting over (but _with_ her data) so we figured, no biggie.

Well, that was wrong. Not only some apps not run, even System Prefs wouldn't open! Here's what she just email me:

Many of the applications don't work: garage band, iPhoto, iMovie, System
preferences, Mail does not open, all of my jpegs from Preview for photos are in
Office, so I can't do anything with them, like ROTATE, etc. iTunes won't work
without updated Quick time, which I installed but to no avail.
So, in essence, I can go on the internet, but I can't do anything else

What the heck happened? I told her to install the OS updates that the system wanted to get. (I don't know if she's done those yet.)

I guess what I'm really wondering is how a full install of everything that came with the hardware could result in such a messed up environment. How could this possibly be? Thanks for comments, gang.

At least, John Niven's experience at the Apple Store gives me hope for the future.
