Look on ebay and whereever else for Mac OSX Tiger. You want a CD set if the iMac doesn't have a DVD drive.

Bruce,

Thanks. If I reinstall the original HDD and connect the Windows HDD
via USB can I reformat it?

Is the retail version of the Mac OS X still available from Apple or do
I need to look at Crigslits/eBay...etc.

Lastly, which version would be "best" for this iMac.

Thanks again for the assistance

Chuck

I am trying to help a friend reinstall Mac OS X

The installer launches but when it gets to the point of selecting the location the 20GB hard drive is dimmed. The message says "This disk is
dimmed becuase the Mac OS X CD installs different languages"

The CD's he got with the iMac are labeled Power Mac G4 - Mac OS X
Install

I'm assuming that these are the wrong CD's to restore the iMac - is
that correct?

That's correct. The gray restore CD's are system specific. You need a
retail copy.

I also tried swapping the HDD with an old windows formatted HDD that I
had but now the installer doesnet even see that drive.

That drive needs to be formatted properly before the installer will
look at it. You can reformat it by selecting Disk Utility from the
Installer menu...you'll have to repartition it, too, possibly.
