In the ongoing project to restore a friends iMac DV500 I have
successfully installed a "new" HDD, setup Mac OS X 10.3 and applied
all of the software updates.
The current firmware level (Boot ROM Version) is 4.1.3F2
I have the 4.1.9 firmware update but it wont install because Mac OS 9
Classic is not installed.
I've browsed the OS X 10.3 CD's (full retail version I think) for the
OS 9 install but I cant find it...
THREE QUESTIONS:
Should I even worry about upgrading the firm ware from 4.1.3 to 4.1.9?
Yes. While it evidently hasn't happened to you there is a specific
problem where the video blanks out when running OS X on iMacs without
the upgrade. It may never happen but I wouldn't want to take the risk
it might someday get triggered.
Is Classic on the OS X 10.3 CD or do I need a separate install CD for
Classic?
Classic came on the install disk for my iBook but it isn't on the
retail. You can download what is known as the NetBoot installer from Apple.
Will I have a problem installing Classic with OS X already installed?
I DID formatted the HDD with the OS 9 Drivers.
No, you shouldn't.
If you have OS 9 installed on another Mac with Firewire you could use
Target Disk Mode to boot from it in order to run the firmware updater.
