The OS 9 disk need to have been mastered after your mac was made. The Mac OS Rom file in the System folder has to be the same or latter version of the one on your original disk.
I had a problem with my iMac G4. It needs the file to be newer than the one on the retail disk. I found a disk for an eMac, which had a version newer than what my iMac needed. It worked just fine. Some people will "hack" the os with a newer file. This gives upgrades like having disks that are larger than 128gb. But I haven't tried it.
