Is there any reason you can't install Panther on the iMac instead of Tiger? Panther runs SO much better on G3s, that its not even funny. I've yet to find a G3 that didn't see watchable flash video in Panther, but nothing but a slide-show in Tiger. Tiger adds alot of overhead (Spotlight, Dashboard, enhanced expose', ect) and just runs overall slower. (however anything with a G4+, and it will run faster. Its heavier on Altivec, the difference between the G4/5 and the G3.) Camino, a great Firefox based browser works on 10.3.9 (version 1.6.10), and iTunes 7 runs on 10.3.9.
However, if you need Tiger, max the ram out as much as possible, and if its under 300mhz, seriously think about using Panther.
