I've been using TM with Airport Extreme and two USB drives to back up 3 macs and a pc. Every couple of weeks one of the drives, the one backing up the macs, starts dropping off the network. when this happens I hook it up directly to a mac, run disk utility repair on it, and it's good for another couple of weeks. There are thousands of errors, I can't remember what they are at the moment, but repair clears them up in a couple of minutes.
