It occasionally happens, not always. Apple designs its machine with RAM that is available at the time. In a year or so, the RAM manufacturers improve their technology, and they sell higher capacity RAM. The newer RAM is usually, not always, backward compatible into Apple's original design. I cannot address the technical details of how this happens. So I would depend on Crucial and OWC to give accurate, up to date info. After all, they have money back policies.
