Apples stated maximum ram is based on the module sizes available at the time that they were able to test. And sometimes in the event of multiple configurations of the same machine, ie the eMac, some were able to take only 1 gig, others 2 gig, in order to avoid confusion, Apple continued to list max memory at only 1 gig even though a few models could take 2 gig. I have 2 gig installed in my 1.42 GHz eMac and 2 gig installed in 3 different eMacs at my place of work. 1 is a 1.42 like mine and 2 are 1.25 GHz models.
