To answer my own question, they were Socket M Core Duo cpus, the T2x00
series, and there's only a few Core2Duos that work: the Socket M T5x00
and T7x00 series that have the 667MHz FSB. They're not compatible with
the later Core2Duo CPUs used in later versions of the iMac. Best I can
do is an upgrade to a 2.66 GHx for $325 or so.
The processors are expensive and hard to find, compared to modern
ones :-(
The white Core2Duo iMacs are much more amenable to upgrading in this
fashion.
