I've done #3 for years except for the cartridges that have to have a

I usually do about 6 refills and then buy a new or replacement cartridge.

What's a chip reset gizmo, and how do I know if my cartridges have or
need it? Is that why the third-party ones often don't work for me at
all?

I have an Epson printer and the cartridges have a "electronic chip" that must be reset before/after filling. If the cartridge is not reset but you fill the cartridge you will not be able to print since the Epson printing software will nag you to death about low ink level(s) and prevent printing.

Check your printer manual and the manufacturers on line info and if unsure simply send them an email.

I have a HP desktop printer and it does have an electronic chip but it does not have to be reset although you do have to read/learn how to refill the cartridges.
