MS-issues notwithstanding... The print-to-PDF function should pretty much just work. Make sure you've got everything selected properly, from Page Setup to the various options in the print dialog itself. If it looks right when you hit the Preview button, it should be right as a PDF.
Works for me, using AppleWorks, NeoOffice, etc, on Tiger, aiming the print jobs at an HP LaserJet.
