It's entirely possible that some neighbor with a Sony Vaio connected 
(intentionally or accidentally) to your ABS; what you see in 'Network' is 
what's on the network at that point in time. If, at some point in the past, 
that Sony had been set as a static address in the ABS, it would also appear in 
the Network; I"ve seen this myself with my printer.

Now as to why the two computers didn't show up in the network when connected 
with the ethernet cable, I cannot say; given your problems, it's entirely 
possible that something was messed up with networking on one or the other 
system, which can usually be fixed by deleting the networking *preferences* 
which are .plist files in /Library/Preferences not the PrefPanes.
