With a Firewire the drive size limit still applies but but the limit is in the FW-IDE controller in the case. Since this is LIKELY quite a bit newer than the computer it's highly probable that the controller does have large drive support (LBA 48). Also, don't forget that when they "fix" a size limitation such as the 128Gb drive limit the new system doesn't support drives of any size, there is still some limit. It's usually much bigger than anything available at that time but there will come a time when the limit will be felt (and people will complain, again, about is there such a limit). However, this doesn't apply to PATA as it doesn't look as if there will be any PATA drives over 500Gb (unless I've missed something). But it still applies to SATA.
