I do not know if I can help, but somebody here might be able to if you provide more details. Are you attempting to use the Apple Mail client or something else? If SMTP does not work, that means you cannot receive. But can you "send" e-mails? First thing -- Are you giving the initial connection process enough time? I mean lots and lots of time! Maybe even 10 minutes or so. As I recall, when I upgraded from Panther to Leopard (no Tiger in between), Leopard's Apple Mail was working a long time with the ISP for authentication with each of my two accounts. It was driving me nuts! After the first connection, things worked very well. Check your ISP for their authentication requirements and any coaching they can give you to connect with Leopard. Some ISPs are excellent in helping out, even to detailed instructions at their web site or by phone. Other ISPs??? Did this computer work with e-mail before the upgrade? If yes, and you have stored old e-mails in mailboxes, do not delete the account in your client, unless you back it up on another media. If you delete the old account, you will lose access to the old mail. Before the Leopard upgrade, what version of OS 9 or OS X were you using? What mail client? After the upgrade, can you access your old e-mail? Can you access your e-mail account at the ISP via their web mail? Does sending and receiving work that way? You can try a test with a new e- mail account at the ISP and create a corresponding new account in your mail client. If the test account works with new name and password, then you know the system is working. Before the upgrade, did you copy by hand all the mail client account settings and use the same exact settings after the upgrade? If this does not help, please give us more of your troubleshooting details.
