     Many thanks for your detailed response. I have pretty much done
what you have suggested. I have not lost the archive from panther
which was the previous os.It all worked well then but yes i can access
my ISP webmail so can send and receive by that route but its far
easier using mail. For some reason addresses and passwords have been
messed up and i am messing them up further trying to fix it. I shall
get onto BT after the holiday and get them to talk me through.
