Greetings iMacsters,

It's very nice to find this group of folks who, like me, recognize
timeless design when they see it. I speak of course of the iMac.

I have a question for the group, but first - here is the curriculum
vitae of my iMac:

I have an iMac G3 DV+, 450mhz, slot loading DVD, in the beautiful
Ruby color. (like Dorothy's shoes). I bought this new at the
university computer store in the summer of 2000 for my twins to use in
the 3rd grade. It came with a 20gb hard drive, OS 9, 128 mb ram. I
also bought a floppy disk adapter. Later I bought a QueFire external
CD burner when the twins started clamoring for one.

We all outgrew that machine but I kept it because its design is so
timeless. Ten years went by. One day, I decided to start tinkering
with it. It took a <lot> of time and an external firewire drive, but
I eventually upgraded it from the very first OS 9, all the way up to
OS 10.4.11. That was an incredibly lengthy process with lots of fits
and starts, but very challenging and worth every minute. As part of
that upgrade, I had to replace the 20gb hard drive with a 40 gb hard
drive. I was lucky enough to get both a licensed copy of OSX 4 and
the hard drive for free. Recently, I also installed the maximum
ram of 1 gigabyte at a cost of $29.98. That gave me a huge jump in
performance!

Now, I have ordered a faster hard drive, to see if I can eke out a
little more speed. For $24, I ordered a Seagate Barracuda 80gb
7200rpm ATA hard drive to replace the existing 5400 rpm unit. If it
doesn't speed things up, I can return it.

Now my question: Has anyone else here seen a performance jump after
upgrading from a 5400 to a 7200 prm hard drive?

If I can ever be of help to anyone with my own experiences, let me
know.

Regards,
Tommy
