I have an interesting proposition here that I sent a copy ot ORSB. Read it
and comment.
I am an ISP who uses Ipswitch mail. I belong to the Ipswitch forum and have
noticed all of the discussion regarding spam.
Because I am somewhat of a novice to the business, maybe my questions are
somewhat nieve.
I have noticed on every spam that has come through me a common vulnerable
thread. That is, if someone is to benefit from the email they have to have
either a phone number (traceable) or a mailing address (traceable) located
in the email so that they might receive remuneration for the program. The
question here is, why don't we go after the one who benefits directly from
the email. I would not bat an eye to bill that person $1.00 per email that
was relayed through me without my permission (for which I would charge
anyway. When people start to run scared because what they are doing will
cost them money, they will not respond to email spammers solicitation to do
business with them. The email spam solicitation business will dry up.
I think that we can legally go after these people if they allow their email
to be relayed through an innocent third party which is illegal. This would
force the email spammers to user their own domains to do the emailing so
their customers won't be coming after them for damages. Then we can simply
get a listing of these IP's and block them. I run a filtered Internet
service that has some 4.8 million blocked sites so taking out sites is not a
new thing to me.
I also think that if mucho bucks were to be made by ISP's for spam our greed
could put it out of existance. If I made it known that I allowed my
subscribers to spam and I had in my fine print that all email over, say 50
units to a single address or relay, had a charge applied to the extent of
$1.00 - $2.00 per email, when a customer suddenly got a collectable bill for
$10,000 - $20,000, I think the word would get around quickly that crime
doesn't pay. Guess what? I have control over their credit cards already.
