I've got 5,200 users on campus (although I'm not sure how many are "active"
users by count). Process 50,000-60,000 messages monthly and growing (Yea,
I know, small time stuff.) The 4,800 students use web messaging
exclusively. We run on a Dell Poweredge 266 single processor, 128MB RAM,
single 8GB HD. Currently using only 600MB+ for all mail folders, lists
(very few) on D: drive, backup'ed nightly. No stated restrictions on
mailbox size (haven't needed to yet.) Except for the web message hanging
occasionally (now fewer and further apart), it works great with few
complaints from users. (I promise they will let you know of problems before
the monitoring software will.)
But, buy at much as you afford (within reason).
