Whew, lots of questions there. I'll do my best to cover everything...

1&2. DNS entries/IP Address

mail.domain.com IN A static.ip.assigned.to.customer.for.dialup
domain.com IN MX 10 mail.domain.com
domain.com IN MX 20 mail.yourimailserver.net

3. Your side
NO virtual host set up in IMAIL AT ALL (very important).
Add entry to your NT HOSTS file (winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts):
static.ip.for.customer mail.domain.com

4. His side (I *think* I have the screen/fields/buttons right, if not,
you'll have to hunt around the IMS Configuration dialogs for the appropriate
fields- don't have an exchange box handy right now to verify)

Open Exchange Administrator Program.
Go to {Site}\Configuration\Connections\Internet Mail Service.
Open Internet mail service properties.
Go to "Dial-up Connections" tab.
Configure dialup parameters using RAS phonebook entry already created.
Mail delivery - select FORWARD ALL MAIL TO HOST (do not select Use DNS). In
host box, fill in IP address (_not_ FQDN) of your Imail server.
Press "Mail Retrieval" button.
Select Retrieve mail using ETRN.

Imail will do a HOSTS file lookup to prevent the mail looping and failing if
it can't reach your customers EXCH server when they are not connected.
Remember, virtual hosts are really just POP3 mailbox depositories, and you
don't want IMAIL depositing the email in POP3 boxes, since Exch will not be
able to pick them up. Exchange server requires the mail to come in via SMTP.
There are 3rd party plugins for exchange that will pull mail from POP3
boxes, but that requires you, the ISP to maintain those POP3 boxes. Using
the method above, the ISP doesn't have to do anything -- the customer
maintains all of their own mailboxes on the exchange box.

When your customer is not online, IMAIL will hold the mail in the SPOOL
directory, and retry sending for every interval you have set in the the
IMAIL control panel applet. You also set the number of retries before the
mail is returned to sender. We retry every 30 minutes for 3 days.

I hope this info helps. I think I covered everything, and hopefully most of
it is correct <g>.
