Agreed, Rusty, running DNS well is much more subtle than assuring a A record for every domain name.  A "DNS lint picker" such as menandmice.com's DNSExpert is a valuable tool, for novices and veterans, as are resources such as www.acmebw.com, with their presentationa and Ask Mr DNS, and the BIND user list.

I'm currently trying to get my reverses delegated and to secure my DNS servers under BIND 8.1, while wondering why my secondary updates ok, but is reported as having data different from my primary.  A rich area!!

DNS is very critical in all that we do.  Mail in particular.  I sitll maintain
that reloading DNS daily has helped our situation considerably.  It takes
all of 2 seconds to do and does not affect anything.
 
I still refer to my O'Reilly DNS and Bind book on a regular basis a couple
of years since I first picked it up.
