We have the latest patch, which is 5.07, so obviously it hasn't been fixed.
I'm just trying to figure out how someone accomplished this so I can get to
the root of the problem. I'm assuming it was some sort of mass-verify
script or bot, so I have disabled the SMTP VRFY commend in SMTP security.
Any other ideas welcome.

What version are you running? I know there were some issues with this
in 5.04 and earlier where this broke. It is fixed in the latest version
I think. <hope> Had it happen here one time so I can sympathize.
On the 'moderator only' list I would suggest password protecting the
list to avoid spoofing by anyone that happens to know the moderators
e-mail address.
