Thank-you all for your help, in the end I decided to install NT afresh
on a spare machine; and installed the basics, just NT, RAS and IMAIL,
thankfully it worked! Next I installed Microsoft DNS, but in TCP/IP
properties I put my ISP's DNS server at the top of the domain search,
and then the Network DNS below. It still works.
That's worked-around my problem;

Thanks again for your help- I have this aying if at first you don't
succeed, curse Bill Gates, then try again, try again, try again, try
again, try again.. drink coffee, and then finally give-up (or start from
the start!)
