The issue with SMTP Auth is not anything that's broken. It's that SmarterMail does not pass SMTP Auth info to spam filtering plug-ins, so you can bypass filtering for users that Auth. That's a very important feature for many of us, due to the stringency of our spam tests....thus we've waited for 3.0.
