Bill,

For running under Windows Server you need software that is more expensive. They basically feature limit it so they can charge you more for versions that run on Server. If you pull the drive and put it into a workstation, you can use any regular ghosting utility, and that might well be the way to go.

Symantec sells a server version under the name Live State Recovery, which is formerly Powerquest V2i Protector. This is one of a new category of backup products that are termed "bare metal recovery". They essentially ghost only the used sectors of the drive into a compressed image, and this makes backups much faster and it resolves issues with locked files. I have been using V2i Protector since a bad experience rebuilding from BackupExec and I have found it to be very reliable, even being able to manage restoring MS SQL server without any special handling. The Acronics software that Kevin pointed out is of the same class of software, and it sells for a bit less than Symantec's solution, but I have no experience with it.

So if you are only looking to ghost, I would pull the drive from the server and put it into a workstation where you can run a cheap version of a ghosting utility, but if you are also looking for a backup utility, bare metal recovery seems to be the way to go these days.

Assuming your current single drive is not on the RAID controller, just
make sure to install the RAID driver on the OS _before_ cloning it
using Ghost or equivalent. If you can actually physically install the
RAID controller in the existing machine, even better, as you'll then
be sure the driver is picking up the hardware.

Thanks for all the great advise everyone!
While pricing Ghost 10.0, I noted that the OS requirements for Win2000 specifies "Professional Only". What version have you used successfully with 2000 Server?

Bill
