hi robert,

excellent and legitimate comments.  we're definitely spending more time with SmarterMail and like their stuff.

Some comments below.

Brand new – probability of bugs is high (not their fault; but a “fact of life” for new software)

==KG> True about the templates being new but the core IMail Server is 10 years old and we just completed the longest beta ever for IMail (Beta 1 through Beta 4, about 3 months).  We also just deployed IMail 2006 internally (Wednesday, Nov 2, 2005) at Ipswitch, including the web messaging templates which many employees use and are now sending/receiving all email through IMail 2006.

As you can imagine, we live and breathe email (and instant messaging as well) through all of our correspondence with customers, resellers, evaluators and more and could not deploy it unless we felt it was absolutely, commercially ready.  Our CEO makes us eat our own dog food;-)

No or limited Macintosh support – (Ipswitch has said maybe later but not in first release)

==KG> True, limited this year but expect support in 1H, 06.  As the new product manager for Messaging and Collaboration ISPs and EDU are important markets for us and we need to support Macs at the client level.

Price – hints of big price increases

==KG> The prices for the 250/1000/UNL levels of IMail Secure, IMail Standard and IMail Premium are being lowered.   Prices for the lower tiers for IMail (new) and IMail SA's are also being lowered.  There are a few skus that will have higher pricing but the vast majority are going to be lower.

bye for now,

kg

We’re looking at SmarterMail versus Imail going forward and although the Imail overhauled webmail sounds interesting, I’m concerned about three things with what I’m hearing about Imail:

Brand new – probability of bugs is high (not their fault; but a “fact of life” for new software)

No or limited Macintosh support – (Ipswitch has said maybe later but not in first release)

Price – hints of big price increases

SmarterMail’s web interface has been around a while, looks good, and works from a Mac.  Given their very good pricing for unlimited domains/users, and their promise to add proper Port 587 support soon, I’m leaning towards them as the rest of their features are very nice and seem to do the job well.

I smell a price increase for current "Unlimited" Imail customers in

Agreed.  However they must be aware of Smartermail and its unlimited license is less than Imails current maintenance agreement. And its web interface looks better too!

We have been an Imail customer and very much would like to stay but if that choice is at a premium  that makes no sense they will continue to lose market share  - us for one for sure.  The golden days are over and Imail needs to understand the market and price accordingly  :).

We just had an price increase as a result
of the ICS fiasco which ran off several Imail customers. I sure hope
they don't step in it again and run more of us off to other
alternatives.

Also note that IMail Secure will be offered at 5 user levels,

Price points will be announced in a month (can't really disclose
publicly until resellers have been notified) but the basic
philosophy is to allow customers to more accurately pay for what
they are using versus having all customer paying for unlimited
  users and domains."

Bill,

I hope you are going to consider those of us who paid for, and have kept up
our service agreements for, unlimited licenses when you create your new
pricing structure!

If Ipswitch causes those of us who have been long-time customers, with
unlimited licensed versions, to fork over significantly more money to keep
the unlimited licensing, that will cause a whole new set of problems for us
and cause us to start re-thinking all of those other companies who's
products we downloaded evaluation versions of and have continued to monitor
during the last year and a half.
