I'd like to offer a counterpoint to the below opinion.

If there is an exploit discovered in a currently viable product I believe it is Ipswitch's responsibility to offer a hot fix. Microsoft seems to use 5 years as a cut off on consumer products, and 8 years on server products. I don't know how old Imail 8.X is but I don't think it's much more than a couple of years. In any case it would be hard to claim that any Imail 8.X product is obsolete.

Let's compare this to the auto industry. If you drive a old Ford and a safety defect is discovered Ford will fix that safety defect for free. An exploit in a mail server is no different, in my opinion, than a safety defect in a vehicle.

Nobody is asking Ipswitch to offer new features for free, but I believe it is their moral, and probably legal obligation to provide a hot fix to correct any exploits.

The people that bought Imail 8.15, or any other version for that matter, paid good money for a product that should work as advertised. That means no defects or exploits.

The purpose of upgraded versions should be to add new features, not to force people to pay more to get bugs fixed or exploits plugged.

Keith....

It's pretty obvious from what Kevin says that 8.15 IS affected...and the
patch that is out is only for 8.2x. So if you want to be protected, upgrade
to 8.2 and then apply the patch.

I for one don't agree with Ipswitch having to release patches for every
single version of their product. You don't see Microsoft releasing updates
for Windows 95, 98, ME or NT anymore...I am a firm believer in if a newer
version of a product is released, the manufacturer should spend all their
time working on any fixes or upgrades for that version, rather than being
forced to go back and fix up bugs in older versions. That just limits the
support you can get on the later releases. That's just my opinion anyway.

Kevin,

When you said "that is correct" are you referring to that there will be NO patch issued for 8.15 for this issue? If no patch is issued, is 8.15
affected by this exploit according to Ipswitch?

Hello Chris,

Yes, that is correct. This patch is only for 8.2x.

Bye for now,

Okay so if I understand this, 8.0 through 8.15HF2 and 8.2 are affected.
There is a patch for 8.2, but there will not be a patch for 8.0/8.15?

Hi All,

Sorry for the delay.

The 8.22 is an update and anyone running 8.2x gets at no charge. As a
reference, here are Ipswitch's naming conventions.

8.0 is a major
8.1 is a minor (though in the past, has been referred to as a major)
8.11 is an update
8.1 Hotfix 1 is a hot fix.

Per earlier thread, we have not validated this with 7.x and typically just
support the current major (2006) and the previous major release and it's
latest minor, if applicable (8.2x in this case).

Bye for now,

kg

I just got off the phone with tech support after 2+ hours. They don't know
if it affects prior versions because the vulnerability was reported for 8.2.
He also let me know that if there is a vulnerability in prior versions we
have to upgrade to get the fix. I think I'll upgrade since 8.2 seems stable.

Kevin,
I've been on hold for 2 hours now with technical support just to find out if
pervious versions of Imail server before 8.2 were affected by these 2 new
vulnerabilities. Can you please shed some light on this? I need to know if
I'm ok or going to have to upgrade to 8.22. Thanks.
