Are you asking from a "best practices" point of view or an RFC point of view?
best practices is the only way to go, unless one is having a sterile, legalistic debate in an ivory tower.
Multiple PTRs are more complicated than one PTR, and "best practice" is "simpler is better", esp with DNS where expertise in both DNS and mail admin is rare.
For all public MTAs, one PTR per IP is/has been "best practice", no matter what the RFCs say is "possible"/shudda/cudda/wudda/musta.
