You cannot prevent people from trying to access your server to send spam.
You can prevent them from succeeding.
It seems that you have done so. Congratulations!
I run a small hosting and email provider. We fend off about a quarter
million attempts a day to send mail to nonexistent email recipients, relay
mail through our servers, and otherwise abuse our system. It's just a fact
of life.

It's a machine sending you spam over multiple
connections, with multiple impersonated HELOs;
alternately, it could be a variety of zombies behind a NAT
firewall being translated to the same public IP.
Excuse my lack of expertise here-
So they are trying to use ME to send spam?
Obviuosly my system would not allow it --- as this happened only briefly--
I sent all the logs...
But in less technical terms than above--- how do I prevent this in the
first place?
