Is this really an "improperly configured mail
server"? When configured with multiple domain names on a single IP, IMail
reports each domain name in the SMTP handoff (e.g., "mail.mydomain.com"). This
actually makes sense to me, but I'm not an expert, so is it really a violation
of the RFCs? Or is it Comcast just being heavy-handed?
Even if this is an RFC violation, Comcast is still
ignoring that the majority of mail servers out there are not running current
versions of software, with no plans to upgrade. How many times have people
posted here mentioning that they still run 6.x, much less 7.x? So Comcast
is going to force these people to upgrade because the staff at Comcast are too
simple-minded to use a weighting system? Frankly, I think that would be
grounds for a class-action suit.

I think you will see less people caring about
false positives in terms of improperly configured mail servers. I hate
AOL but I love the fact they won't accept email from people without PTR's. I
wish more ISP's would take on this policy.

So
now everyone starts discussing the Comcast problem? Check the archives
for the last two weeks for Comcast, particularly the messages from Dave
Doherty, who has had success in dealing with Comcast. My own
experiences have been mixed: Comcast fixed the problem then blacklisted us
again, then fixed it again. I'm waiting to see what happens this week.
With all due respect, I put this problem at the feet of Comcast, not
Ipswitch. Comcast made a really generic decision for blacklisting IPs,
and that's just bad mail administration. Think about it: most Imail
admins who fight spam (such as by using Declude) use a weighting system with
multiple tests. The purpose is to catch as much mail as possible while
avoiding false positives. Comcast clearly doesn't care about false
positives.
While having the issue fixed in the next version of 2006
is nice, it won't help all the others still running 8.x and 7.x. In
fact, there is no way for Ipswitch to fix the problem for even a majority of
Imail installations, much less all of them. The people we should be
screaming at are over at Comcast.
I find this whole situation doubly
ironic because of the large number of zombies spewing spam and viruses and
that already Comcast subscribers.

And that makes Imail worthless to many if they
cant send email to one of the largest broadband providers in the country.
I consider this a critical error that must be fixed asap.

No they blacklist the entire mail server's IP
address and then nobody can send email to a Comcast address. The tech
said they had numerous people with Imail servers that had the same
problem, but Imail will not let you do anything to counter the problem.
I think the mail people affected are those people that are web
hosts, etc that have virtual domains.

I guess they're doing
this on a domain by domain basis? Because I've seen successful
e-mails delivered to comcast.net as late as this morning.

Yes, this is obviously a BIG problem since we're talking
about on of the largest broadband providers in the US.

I just got off the phone with the abuse
department at Comcast. I was told that we were being blacklisted
because of our HELO did not match or something. He said that it was
not configurable in Imail even in the
latest
version,
and it was going to be used more aggressively with other ISP's.
Any
suggestions?
Ahhh... I'm not alone.
