This sounds similar to the old IMAP vulnerability that was resolved in 8.15.
As I recall, the behavior was just what you describe. There was a HF for it,
and it should have been resolved long before 8.22. But maybe this is some
form of attack against your server.
When it happens, if the desktop works, run netstat -n from a command prompt
to see how many connections are there. If you can't get on the desktop, set
up a batch file that runs netstat and files its output, maybe every five
minutes or so. Then you can see if connections are building up. If there is
a pattern there, that may be a good starting point.
Also, of course, review your firewall setup and test the server against a
srvice like www.grc.com's Shields Up service.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Server Issues
Hello All,
We have been having an issue with our Imail server for the past few months
and I am not able to find out what might be going on. Below is the server
setup.
Windows 2003 Server running Imail 8.22 with all hot fixes and everything.
Dual Pent 3.06GHz Proc
4 GB RAM
For some reason about every 7 days on average the server will lock-up and
we
will have to power it off manually and restart it. I have had a few
instances where it has created a Dr Watson error and I upload the memory
dump to Micro$oft, but never hear anything back. Anyway, I have looked
thru
the Event Logs and all Imail logs and can not find anything showing any
type
of errors. I even used the Imail Log Analyzer and it does not show
anything
unusual that I can find.
We do use What's Up Pro to monitor the server and it reports the issue to
us, but I need to know why it is occurring to get it resolved. Anyone
know
of any other logs I might be able to look at to get a clue as to why
things
suddenly shut-down? It is weird as I can usually still ping the server,
but
Imail is dead in the water. This happened last night and I tried
restarting
the Imail services, but it ended up just hanging the server when they
tried
to restart.
Thanks,
Grant Griffith
