We're using MailBee Webmail from Afterlogic to address this need with our users while we wait for IMail 2006 to stabilize.
I'm not sure how long this product will be supported, since the developer has been promising updates for months that have not appeared, but it's ASP, so you can modify source code to your heart's content. Its not perfect, has some bugs related to address book access while in HTML mode that may be easy to iron out, but it works in place of Imail's webmail and won't need to be changed if you decide to upgrade to 2006 later. SQM has the ability to display email in plain text mode by default and blocks external images from displaying if desired. The screenshot is of a version of SQM that has been customised for the hMailServer, but it works with whatever is listening on port 143.
